How to Use Pin Boards to make Inspiring Mood Boards

At Red17, we've spent a lot of time creating mood boards. We mainly use them in the workplace, but they're fantastic for any project and can be utilised in the home too. We've been using pin boards as our backdrop to create really tactile and creative boards which help to provide inspiration for anyone that looks at them.

Pinterest is another great option for creating mood boards, we often use them to create online inspiration boards, however, we much prefer creating real life boards for our internal projects. Its down to your own personal preference, but sometimes is best to get back to basics and have a bit of an escape from the digital world!

If you need a little help creating your mood board then you're in luck! In this post, we're going to reveal how you can use pin boards to make the best mood boards around and inspire those around you.

First off, you need to get yourself a pin board to start the process! This shouldn’t be difficult; most people have a spare one lying around the house or office. But if not we stock a huge variety of notice boards and pin boards which are perfect for mood boards. Once you’ve got one, you can begin with the first step; giving it a background. Use anything you like to create a beautiful backdrop for the pin board. Obviously, your background has to reflect the mood you’re going for. If you want your board to inspire positivity, then use happy colours. We like to use a mix of paper and vinyl, but wallpaper is also a great option for mood boards. Don’t worry; you don’t have to go out and spend loads on a huge sheet of wallpaper. Just get some of those free samples and stick them down!

Whether or not your board is for a specific project or for general inspiration, you'll have to find some things that inspire you. These can be absolutely anything you want. We like to use quotes that people can read and feel uplifted. We often intermingle these with specific project based ideas and imagery. Other ideas include photos of famous people that you look up to or motivational cards. Some people even have photos of family members or pictures their kids drew. It reminds them of their main motivations in life and helps give the mood board some extra emotion.

Once your mood board is complete, you have to think about placement. Where can you get the most out of it? Stick it in a place where you’ll see it a lot. This is one of the biggest benefits of pin boards over Pinterest. On Pinterest, everything is virtual, and you have to look at it on a device. When you’re working, you can't waste time going on Pinterest every five minutes. But, with a pin board, you can place it on a wall in front of your desk. Or, on a wall in an office so everyone can see it whenever they pass by. It means you can feel inspired and motivated by your mood board throughout the day.
If you’re looking for a source of inspiration, then a pin board might be right for you. Take some time to come up with a design of your choosing. Make sure to find the perfect position for it and you'll soon be feeling inspired!
